On July 28, 2012, Dantri published a Vietnamese article titled “Thủ khoa quê nghèo ước mơ trở thành bác sĩ” (“A valedictorian from a poor hometown dreams of becoming a doctor”). The article was about me, Khuynh Van Nguyen, after I became the valedictorian of the Medicine program at the School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
At that time, I received a total score of 28, including 8.25 in Biology, 9.75 in Mathematics, and 9.75 in Chemistry. For my family and me, it was a deeply joyful moment, especially because my path to school had always been connected with many practical worries: my family worked in agriculture, our finances were limited, and I lived with my grandmother so I could study in a quiet place while also helping care for her.
The article recorded my small home, my simple study corner, the days I helped my family with farm work, and the happiness my parents felt when they heard the news. Looking back, I see it as more than a story about an exam result. It preserved a part of my youth, my family’s sacrifices, and my early dream of becoming a doctor.
